The Advent candles are rich in symbolism and help mark the four Sundays leading up to Christmas. Traditionally arranged in a wreath, each candle represents a theme of spiritual preparation for the coming of Christ. Different Christian churches remember the candles in different ways.
The first candle in the Church of England remembrs the Patriarchs. Men of faith such as Abraham or David. Other denominations mark this sunday as one of hope, and remembers the prophets who foretold the coming of the Messiah. The first candle is normally blue, purple, or red.
