Perpetua was a young Christian woman martyred in the early third century whose story has inspired believers for centuries. She lived in Carthage, a major centre of Roman North Africa, during a time when Christians sometimes faced severe persecution for refusing to worship the Roman gods.
Perpetua was a noblewoman and a new mother when she was arrested around AD 203. Her imprisonment took place during the reign of Septimius Severus, when local enforcement of imperial religious expectations led to the arrest of several Christians preparing for baptism. Among those imprisoned with her was Felicity, a young enslaved woman who was also expecting a child. Their shared suffering and steadfast faith became central to the memory of their martyrdom.
Perpetuaโs story is preserved in the Passion of Perpetua and Felicity, one of the earliest surviving Christian writings that includes the personal voice of a martyr. Parts of the account are believed to come from Perpetuaโs own prison diary. She records vivid dreams and visions that strengthened her resolve, interpreting them as signs of her coming victory through suffering.
Despite emotional pleas from her father to renounce her faith and save her life, Perpetua refused. She remained firm in her confession of Christ, choosing loyalty to her faith over family pressure and personal safety. Eventually, she and her companions were publicly executed in the arena, facing wild beasts before being killed by the sword.
Perpetuaโs courage, spiritual insight, and unwavering conviction made her one of the most celebrated martyrs of the early Church. Her witness continues to stand as a powerful example of faithfulness under persecution.
