Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent in the Christian calendar, and occurs 40 weekdays before Easter. The day derives its name from the custom of placing ashes, n the shape of a cross, on the forehead of believers. This symbolises penitence, and can be seen as a spiritual discipline for all believers. The ashes are made from burning palm crosses from the previous year.
