The First Sunday in Lent

Lent is a period of fasting, moderation and self-denial. The season of Lent begins with the Ash Wednesday service and concludes on Easter Day. The seasons lasts for 46 days (40 days excluding Sundays). The practice began in the 4th Century, though the English name for Lent derives from the Anglo_Saxon word for ‘Spring’. The practice carries biblical significance as Jesus fasted for 40 days in the desert, as did the Prophet Elijah. It originally began as a season of repentance, hence the practice of fasting in sackcloth and ashes.
