Accounts vary as to the accuracy of the historical background. The legends handed down suggest that a priest ‘Valentine’ defied an Imperial edict to not marry soldiers before they joined the legion, in the hope of cutting familial ties. Valentine ignored the order and continued to marry them. Incurring the wrath of Emperor which led to his arrest and beheading on February 14th 270. Later, in 496, February 14th was named in his honour.
